San Diego 2 faced newly promoted Division I team Friends CC at Canyonside Park in San Diego last Sunday, May 3rd. Friends looked like a depleted side with only 10 on the field and missing some of their regular performers, including the USA national squad member Hammad. SDCC2, on the other hand, had made one change from their previous outing. Karthik R. returned to the side to replace Pradeep C.

The day began positively for SDCC2 when they won the toss and skipper Vishal had no hesitation in asking Friends to have a bat first. While one of the opening batsman, Shayan, started the proceedings very cautiously, the other one appeared to want to send every single delivery to the 56 freeway. The attempt was short-lived as Raju drew first blood, thanks to a well judged catch by Jatin at mid on, in what would end up being a match winning bowling spell. Shayan looked confident and happy to tap the ball around for runs but was not getting the kind of support he needed from the new batsman, who just had a dead bat to offer to every ball that came his way. Credit goes to our seam bowlers Vishal, Raju and Jatin for keeping the batsmen at bay. The introduction of spin made it even more difficult and right at the stroke of drinks, Pratik dismissed Shayan getting him clean bowled around the legs with some smart off break bowling. Sadiq, the Friends skipper, came in to bat and just like Shayan appeared to be in good nick but once again lacked support from the other batsmen. Runs were clearly not on the batsmen’s mind and Sadiq and Ali hung on in the middle for a few more overs. Jogi took a sharp catch at gully to dismiss Ali off Jatin and this began the Friends’ batting collapse. Sadiq called for power play and began to show some intent but was nabbed by Raju off a lofted flick to long leg, caught by Sarvesh who was strategically moved to a different position by Vishal during the over. The next batsmen were all dismissed for about 30 more runs. All the SDCC2 bowlers pitched in with Jatin taking 2, Jogi and Pratik taking 1 wicket each. Vishal was unlucky to miss out as a couple of close LBW decisions by the umpire did not go his way. SDCC2 did well in the fielding department with not a single catch dropped and Sharvesh effecting a direct throw run out. The wrecker-in-chief Raju finished with 4 for 25 off his 9 overs and Friends CC were bundled for 78 runs by the 25th over.

Akash and Jogi started the chase for SDCC2 with confidence. Jogi sent 3 excellent shots to the boundary before both he and Akash fell to ordinary deliveries that may have kept a tad bit low. Akshay went in at #3 and displayed his all-round shot making ability by playing excellent drives, cuts and pulls to the boundary. He ended up making 32 runs and ensured that the finish was just a formality when he got out caught playing an aggressive pull to a slower ball. Sharvesh 13 not out, at #4, provided good support and he and Sri, who joined at the fall of Akshay’s wicket, ensured that SDCC2 sailed home with a win in their bag in the 15th over. A comprehensive win after a bad loss against Corinthians CC the previous weekend and over to a big away game against Vijayta on May 9th.

Clinical win for SDCC2 this game as bowling, fielding, catching and batting were up to the mark by all players.

Man of the Match – Raju Palagummi for his excellent bowling performance.
