San Diego won the toss and no hesitation in bowling first. We have been successful chasing and it was a good decision to stick to our strengths.

Vishal and Gaurav opened the bowling for us. Vishal was as usual very accurate with well thought out fields. Vishal was unfortunate in his first over when catch went down at mid on. Gaurav, opening the bowling again this season, was swinging the ball out so beautifully. He made the batsmen reach out and made them play. He was quickly rewarded with a wicket of the opener – again the ball moving out and easing the bat to the keeper. Luckily the dropped catch did not cost the team. Atul joined Kalyan and unfortunately for the team, Atul’s catch was dropped too off Vishal’s bowling – this time at point. Gaurav in the mean time kept one end tight until the end of the Power-play although he was unlucky a couple of LBW shouts did not go his way. Kalyan and Atul batted sensibly playing our bowlers out. They got to 57/1 in the 18th over. Jogi was introduced to bowl and immediately the batsmen tried to break the shackles. When they did that they found themselves in trouble again thanks to a brilliant one-handed catch at slip by Vishal off Jogi. Atul was out. At the break the team went in at 61/2 in 19 overs. We were going through the overs at the speed of light – a terrific improvement in our over rates.

In the second session, Jatin and Raju were brilliant beginning the session with 3 consecutive maidens. Jatin bowled beautifully and had solid control over his line and length. The pressure these bowlers created worked in SDCC2’s favor. Raju immediately got the ball to kick off the pitch with his outswinger and got Saqib out for a duck! Out fielding significantly improved beyond the first break – Pintu made up for a lost opportunity earlier by effecting a stunning run out. He dived for the ball, stopped it and in quick motion threw the ball to bowler where Vishal on his follow through went behind the stumps, collected the ball to get their set batsman Kalyan out for 43. It was a classic dismissal. Sujesh and Rohit never got going and got out pretty cheap. Ram took a blinder of a catch at gully to get Rohit out. However, Ajay and vikas got together and strung in a good partnership. Bowling changes during the course of the game was timely as bowlers were fresh and focussed when bowling in hot weather. SDCC2 fielders made it very difficult for them to score quickly. The runs were hard to come by thanks to great fielding by the in fielders. Akash was simply superb on the field saving at least 10 runs for SDCC2. They eventually labored along to 167/9 in 45 overs.

Our bowling was incredible – everyone chipped in with their share of wickets and kept the lines very tight. We have been doing this throughout the season and it should not be surprising to other teams why we are the best bowling unit in the league. In spite of the hot weather conditions, our fielders toiled hard and ensured we restricted them. Had we taken those few catches that went down, we might have gotten them under 120.

Our batting started with a jolt – Sridhar and Akshay getting out cheaply. But Gaurav and Akash batted with immense maturity. Akash was showing his class with his positive footwork and solid defense. Gaurav was ticking the scorecard. Both the batsmen ran quick between the wickets and the heat did not play any part at all in the way they batted. They made a 113 run partnership and took the team to safety. They had ensured Colts had no way of getting back into this game. We lost 3 quick wickets towards the end which is something we need to work on, but Hrishi ensured he was there till end to ensure we got the W.

Kudos to Ritu and Daivee for coming out and supporting the team. Ritu also scored the first 10 overs for SDCC2 when we were batting. Thank you ladies for the support!!!

San Diego cruised home by 4 wickets. A win very well deserved and we outplayed them in all the departments of the game.

Man of the match – Gaurav Khillon for his all round performance (53 runs, 2 wickets and a catch)

We controlled the game well throughout with our bowling, batting and fielding. There were 3 area of improvements from last game which we can get better in.

1. Cut down the extras – We gave 20 wides which is a bit too much,

2. Catching, and

3. Finishing off the game especially when batsmen are set.

Let’s keep working together and we will get better at it.

Go SDCC!
