It was another perfect day in San Diego for San Diego 2’s last game of the season vs Century. Century was rooted to the bottom of the table before the game and the threat of relegation must have definitely given them additional motivation. Century won the toss and chose to bowl. There was one change to our team from the last game as Ram replaced Raju in the 11.

Sridhar and Karthik again opened the innings for us. But unlike the previous game, the start didn’t go as well. Both the openers got out cheaply and the score read 30 for 2 when Gaurav joined Akshay. The pair steadied the innings and proceeded along cautiously to 60 in 22 overs. Spin was introduced in the form of Malinda Fernando and that proved to be the turning point. A wily bowler who can bowl doosras, carrom balls and the lot, he troubled the batsmen with his variations. He promptly got his first wicket in his second over. Gaurav bowled playing down the wrong line. Sharvesh and Akshay soon followed and his figures read 3 for 5 in 4 overs at one point. With another recovery act needed, Hrishi joined Jatin in the middle. The lower order has bailed us out enough times this season and the hope of a big score was still there. Both batsmen scored boundaries regularly and kept the strike rotating. Special mention should be given to their running between the wickets on a hot day. Hrishi finally got out in the 41st over after a well made 43. Their partnership yielded 95 runs.  Jatin, who scored a fluent 50 that included 3 huge sixes, followed immediately. There was a minor collapse at the end and the team was bowled out for 192 with 4 balls left. The aforementioned Malinda taking 5 wickets.

Century’s innings had to start immediately as the lunch was not at the ground yet. There is definitely something about a mini session when the batsmen know that there is a break in play coming. Our new ball bowlers took advantage of that in a big way. Both Vishal and Gaurav bowled beautifully and picked up 3 quick wickets in the 7 overs we had. The dangerous Asela got going after the break with a few boundaries. But it was short lived as CP bowled an excellent over and picked up his wicket. Malinda, now with the bat, came in and along with Nishanta consolidated the innings. When the latter got out in the 22nd over to Prateek, the score was 80 and we were firmly in control. The incoming batsman, Pulasthi, had other ideas and was attacking from the start. The wides didn’t help our cause either as we gave 23 of them. Vishal tried to break the partnership with bowling changes but there was no success. The pair of Pulasthi and Malinda, with an unbeaten 113 run partnership clearly outplayed us on the day and won the game with 7 overs to spare. Pulasthi finished with 55 and Malinda with 61 to go with his 5 wickets.

Man of the match – Jatin Aneja for his gritty knock (53 runs) to help SDCC2 post a fighting total

Overall, a fantastic season for the team comes to an end. 9 wins out of 11 games is an excellent return. Next up for SDCC is the playoffs.

Go SDCC!
